What Is Ayurveda? Part 1
The Oldest Healing Science, Dating Back More Than 5,000 Years
The knowledge of Ayurveda originated in India and formed the foundation for all other healing systems that exist today. It’s name, Ayurveda, means “truth of life”: veda means truth and ayus means life. The main purpose of Ayurveda is to heal by bringing balance to the body, mind, and spirit. This is accomplished through diet, lifestyle, and rejuvenation. Here’s the key though…
In order to be successful you must know yourself.
In Ayurveda, there are three basic types or doshas. These doshas are: vata, pitta and kapha. Each of us have a unique combination of these doshas and this combination is known as your constitution, or Prakruti.
If you look at the graphic above, you will notice that these doshas are based on the five elements. This is because all things are made up of vata (ether, air), pitta (fire, water), and kapha (water, earth). In order to begin balancing yourself, you must first understand how the elements are distributed throughout your body, mind, and spirit. Knowing your dosha will help you to choose the right diet and lifestyle to bring balance and wellness into your life.
“…constitution is the main framework and the very heart of Ayurveda. Your Prakruti, or constitution, is the map to discovering the foods and lifestyle that will balance you.”
